For the 4th consecutive year, the Loganville Red Devils are the Region 8-AAAA champions. The Red Devils defeated a very good Winder-Barrow team in the best of three series Thursday night at Winder. The victories secured first place in Region 8-AAAA and home field advantage in the state playoffs.
It was a series that lived up to the hype. Both games came down to one run, 4-3 in the first and 3-2 in the second. When facing a good pitcher, in order to win you have to be able to play “small ball”. Good pitchers, like the Bulldoggs Travis Demeritte, don’t often give up home runs or extra-base hits so you have to work the pitch count, put the ball in play, be aggressive on the bases, take advantage of mistakes and play sound fundamental defense. This is how Loganville won its 4th region championship.
In the first game the Doggs scored first putting up one run in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Devils answered with 2 runs in the top of the third. Kyle Hall got the inning started with a singled to left center Hall stole 2nd and then scored on an error. Clint Frazier (BB), taking advantage of another Winder miscue, scored on a passed ball.
Winder tied the game in the bottom of the 4th when Ryan Brown (1B) scored on a passed ball. Both teams were held scoreless for the next two innings. Loganville moved back into the lead after Christian Miller, who reached first on a base on balls, scored on an error when Daniel Milligan put the ball in play. Braxton Beck, pinch running for Milligan, stole 2nd, moved to third on a passed ball and was platted by Garrett Ford’s single.
In the bottom of the 7th, Ryan Brown scored, after reaching first on a fielder’s choice, on Blake Marbut’s double to right. Marbut attempted to extend the play and was thrown out ending the inning.
Christian Miller started on the hill for the Red Devils, pitching 4 and 2/3′s innings giving up two hits, two earned runs and striking out 4. Davis Mayo finished the final 2 and 1/3 innings.
In the second game of the double header LHS defeated Winder 3-2. Avery Fagan came out blazing against the Doggs shutting them down for five innings. The Red Devils scored one in the the bottom of the first when Kyle Hall reached home on an error after getting walked to lead off the inning.
Loganville scored two more in the 4th when Christian Miller who reached the bases on a walk was moved to third on Brandon Pergantis’s double. Miller then scored on a passed ball. Brandon Moncrief who was a pinch runner for Pergantis scored the second run of the inning when he was driven in by Garrett Ford’s single.
Fagan gave way to Pergantis on the hill and the Doggs began to get in rhythm. The Red Devils gave up two runs in the top of the 6th and the tying run was on third when Pergantis reached down deep and stopped the Dogg’s rally. Pergantis got Drew Davis to ground out to second for the first out and then he struck out the next two batters to end the game and seal the game for the Red Devils.
Offensively the Red Devils were led by David Mayo, Daniel Milligan, Brandon Pergantis and Garrett Ford.
Avery Fagan got the win in an outstanding pitching performance. Fagan pitched 5 innings giving up one hit, no runs, and struck out 9. Brandon Pergantis pitched the last 2 innings giving up 2 runs and striking out 5.
